● What fruits to grow for your family

● Understanding their growth rate and planting accordingly

● How to make a self-sustaining orchard

Besides growing vegetables, a self-sustaining family who is dependent on homesteading must come up with their own production of fruits. A survival garden is actually incomplete if you grow only vegetables and consume in that way. Fruits are necessary and once you have thought about survival gardening, you cannot go out to the shops for buying fruits for your family. Rather you should think about having them right in your backyard. Most of all, it does not take that much effort to grow fruits as they are self-sustaining and once you grow them, they become easy for managing. As you already have a garden and your soil beds are ready, you can leave out the hard part. You can start planting fruits that you want in the same place, this is called companion planting. But for doing so, you would need a better preparation from the first and a proper planning is required. What you must be careful of:

● What fruits you would like to have

● Quantity of your consumption

● Time you would like to give

● Understanding companion planting of fruits and vegetables

There are several types of fruits you can grow. The easy ones are mostly berries as they take less time to grow. You would get results quicker and survival gardening would be successful in a way. They also require less space as homesteading is all about maintaining proper space gesture. Fruits that you can try out:

● Raspberries

● Blueberries

● Strawberries

● Rhubarb berries

● Summer squash

● winter squash

● Watermelon

To grow these fruits, it would require less effort and you want those fruits on a daily basis. It would help you to get self-reliant in fruits for your family and avoid going to the market. Survival gardening depends on fruits too. If you can come up with efficient ways for producing such fruits, you will become self-reliant in no time.

Fruits have various purposes in your quest for becoming self-reliant through homesteading. You can preserve berries of different kind and with a little bit of processing, you can come up with jams. Making jelly is not hard at all and fruits are its key ingredients. If you can grow various fruits, you can have various flavors of jelly in your breakfast.

You can also think about an orchard of your own. If you do not have enough space, then it is not a problem at all. There are several sizes of fruit plants that you can select from and having various plants in the same place would increase the rate of cross pollination. With a little bit of extra care and preservation, you will have enough supply of fruits to be self-sufficient for the whole year. Tips regarding an Orchard:

● Make sure you choose the correct size plants.

● Space management should be done properly.

● Before you start off the garden, make sure you plan out every single detail if you plan to have a companion planting.
